Troubleshooting

What you see, what it usually means, and what to do. Most of it is the camera's Wi-Fi.

Starting up

What you seeWhat it usually meansWhat to do
No camera found on this networkThe camera's Wi-Fi is not started, or the PC is not on the camera's network. The page is served anywayOn the camera: Camera Control API → Connect. On the PC: join the camera's Wi-Fi. Then press Connect in the top right of the page
The page loads but says No camera yetThe sameAs above; the page needs no restart
ablecamera is not recognisedPowerShell was not reopened after installing PythonClose PowerShell, open it again
The camera's network will not accept the passwordCanon made a new password when a connection was added on the cameraOn the camera use Connect → the saved connection; or re-join with the password now on its screen
No Camera Control API entry in the camera's Wi-Fi menuThe API was never activatedStep 1 of Getting started, with the PC online
discover finds nothing but the page worksThe page is already holding the camera; only one client is allowedNothing is wrong

While using it

What you seeWhat it usually meansWhat to do
The camera stops answering after about 30 secondsAuto power off - the factory setting - and the app is not connectedStart the page; it switches auto power off off while connected and puts it back after
Everything answers 502Something is polling the camera too hard, or a second app is connectedClose Canon's apps; one client at a time
The live picture is slow or stuttersThe camera's radio is 2.4 GHz onlyExpected. Shrink the picture with Smaller; use Check focus for detail
The level or histogram says Reading is 4 seconds oldThe camera's own menu is open, or the picture stoppedClose the camera's menu; the reading resumes by itself
Not focused after Focus nowThe lens could not find focus where it was pointedPress the picture on something with contrast, or move closer
The focus buttons are missingThe camera is in manual focus, which the API cannot switch it out ofChange it in the camera's focus menu, or the lens's AF/MF switch where it has one
Check focus says the camera is not recording a JPEGThe camera records only RAW, or HDR PQ is on (HEIF)Press Record a JPEG as well
A preset applied with one setting differentThe mounted lens or body cannot do that valueNothing to do; the page named the nearest it could
The dials are missing and the page mentions a Basic ZoneThe mode dial is on SCN, A+ or a creative filter and the camera is setting the exposure itselfR50: the app takes the dial when you connect. R100: turn the dial to M by hand

The page is slow to open on the PC

Windows takes a fixed ~14 seconds on its first lookup of a .local name. On the PC itself use http://127.0.0.1:8720/ — the address the app prints first — or the 192.168.… address. Phones resolve .local names instantly.

If the PC's Wi-Fi adapter has been given the camera's address as a DNS server, every name lookup on that adapter waits on the camera, which reads as ten-second stalls on every press. Reset the adapter to automatic DNS.

Signing in and syncing

What you seeWhat it means
Invalid credentials. The email or password is wrong; the address is kept, only the password cleared
Email not verified. The link sent when the account was created has not been opened yet
App is not enabled for this workspace.Your account exists but has not been given this app - ask whoever administers it
Could not reach https://…No internet from this machine right now; presets still work locally
The sign-in has expired. Sign in again. The platform no longer knows the old sign-in; nothing else changed

What the app changes on the camera

Only two things, both said on the page and both put back when it stops: auto power off (disabled while connected) and, on an R50, the mode dial (held and set to M). If the app was stopped abruptly and the camera seems stuck — buttons doing nothing, or sleeping too soon — turning the camera off and on restores both.
